She started her cake-baking and decorating business after overcoming breast cancer at the age of 50. William Greenberg, a friend and bakery proprietor, then began bringing clients to her for wedding cakes that he did not make. After relocating from Long Island to Manhattan
Weinstock started preparing cakes for private occasions, first at the Carlyle Hotel, where she established a reputation. She eventually began manufacturing wedding cakes. In 1983, she and her husband transformed a warehouse in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood into a four-story home and bakery called Sylvia Weinstock Cakes.
She designed cakes for celebrities including Oprah Winfrey, Kim Kardashian, and Martha Stewart.She stressed buttercream, sugar flowers, and stenciled designs over fondant in her cake decorations, calling it “cheap and easy”.Bon Appétit refers to her as “the Leonardo da Vinci of wedding cakes”.
