Tara is the daughter of Dunbar VanDerveer (father) and Rita VanDerveer (mother) in terms of her parents (mother). She grew up in West Hill, New York, a small village near Schenectady.

She helped the US win four gold medals, one bronze medal, and an overall record of 88-8. Tara captained a USA Select Team to a 2-3 result against Yugoslavia and the Soviet Union in 1990.
In 1993, she coached the United States to a 6-1 record and a gold medal at the COPABA World Cup Qualifying event. The gold medal qualified the US for the FIBA World Cup in 1994, and she returned to manage the team that year.
