Patitz was born in Hamburg, Germany, but grew up in the Swedish coastal town of Skanör. Patitz made her modeling debut there, winning third place in a 1983 contest, according to Vogue.

Though she didn’t work for a year after the competition, photographer Peter Lindbergh advanced Patitz’s career by featuring her in his renowned 1988 shot “White Shirts: Six Supermodels, Malibu.” Lindbergh photographed her again for the January 1990 supermodels cover of British Vogue.

After seeing the British Vogue issue, George Michael cast Patitz in his “Freedom ’90” music video.

Patitz was an animal and nature enthusiast in her spare time. She once told Kendall Conrad that she was “happiest in the ocean and the natural environment.”

“My animals are my family, and I treat them as such,” she went on to say. “I can’t imagine living without animals.”

“Needless to say, we are all crushed by her passing,” Nicolas said, referring to her commitment to both. She had a kind and generous heart and was a strong supporter of animal welfare. One of her major causes was the conservation of wild horses through the ‘Return to “Freedom- Wild Horse Conservation’ organization in Santa Barbara.
