Virtue attended Holy Names High School in Windsor, Ontario, and AMDEC, a Stratford, Ontario-based electronic learning facility. She graduated from the University of Windsor with a bachelor’s degree in psychology in 2007 and a Doctor of Laws (LLD) from the University of Western Ontario in 2019. She also plans to graduate with an MBA from Queen’s University in 2020.

Tessa went to an ice rink as part of a school field trip when she was six years old. She was motivated to pursue a career as an ice skater. She then began to learn how to ice skate. Tessa began her professional coaching sessions with Carol Moir at Ilderton Skating Club, following her passion. Carol was also instructing her nephew Scott Moir at the time, so they were paired together. Tessa and Scott began skating together in 1997 and quickly established themselves as an ice-dancing duo. They eventually left the club to pursue professional training in Ontario.

Winning the Junior National Championships

At the 2001 Canadian Championships, Virtue and Moir competed in the pre-novice division. They won the novice bronze medal at the 2002 Canadian Championships a year later. The following season, they competed in the Junior Division of the Canadian Championships and finished seventh. They relocated to Canton, Michigan, in 2004 and started training at the Arctic Edge Ice Arena. Then they competed in the 2004 Canadian Championship, which they eventually won.

Making it to the Senior World Championships

In the 2006–07 season, Virtue and Moir made their international debuts as seniors. They made their senior debut at the Grand Prix tournament, where they won their first silver medal. They also won a bronze medal at the Four Continents Championships and another silver at the 2007 Canadian Championships. The ice duet competed in the 2010 World Championships and took first place with 44.13 points in the compulsory dance. With 70.27 points, they also set a world record in the original dance. With 224.43 points, they won their maiden World Championship.

The London (ON) Sports Hall of Fame honoured Tessa and Moir in 2010. Only athletes who have been retired for two years are considered for induction, which is a unique decision. In 2018, the duo was honored into the Sports and Athletics category of Canada’s Walk of Fame.
