Similarly, he was able to record “Devil in the Bottle,” which went on to become a No. 1 success on Billboard’s Hot Country Singles chart. It also managed to become a top 60 Pop hit in 1975.

Following that, his follow-up, “Tryin’ to Beat the Morning Home,” also reached No. 1 and charted in the top 100 that summer. Several additional recordings, including “Motels and Memories” and “Show Me a Man,” charted in the top ten between 1975 and 1977.

Sheppard eventually signed with Warner Bros Records in 1977. He began with “When Can We Do This Again” that summer and went on to release Last Cheater’s Waltz, I’ll Be Coming Back for More, Do You Wanna Go to Heaven, I Loved ‘Em Every One, Party Time, Only One You, Finally, War Is Hell (On the Homefront Too), Slow Burn, I Loved ‘Em Every One, and many more. He then joined with Columbia Records later that year.

He was later able to return to the top 10, with his best success during this time period coming with “Strong Heart” in 1986. Half Past Forever (Till I’m Blue in the Heart), You’re My First Lady, and One for the Money were three more of his singles that reached No. 2 in 1987.

Furthermore, his success lasted until around 1988. It was during this time that rootsy neo-traditionalist artists began to overtake more polished pop-country artists.

In 1995, Sheppard took a two-year break from the road to play solely for eight months a year at T.G. Sheppard’s Theater in the Smokies. When the theater was sold in 1997, he was finally able to return to the road. He was subsequently able to continue touring and performing throughout the 1990s. He did not, however, sign a new record contract and did not release any new songs until 1997.

Finally, T G Sheppard: Live at Billy Bob’s, released on 2002, finds him singing his old classics for an ecstatic crowd at the legendary honky tonk in Fort Worth, Texas. T G Sheppard also released Timeless in 2004, an album in which he sang songs from the big band period.

Sheppard was also an associate sponsor for Tim Richmond and Ken Schrader’s No. 25 Folgers Chevrolet in the NASCAR Cup Series in the mid to late 1980s. The Folgers sponsorship was then transferred to Roush Racing and driver Mark Martin in 1990. Furthermore, he is currently on tour all year.

And, after a nearly two-decade absence, he was finally able to release a new single “I Wanna Live Like Elvis” in January 2019, with a new album to follow. Similarly, Sheppard operated a small chain of now-defunct eateries in Tennessee called “T.G.’s North of the Border Cafe and Cantina,” with outlets in Gatlinburg and Chattanooga.
