When Thon was born, his country was in the midst of a bloody civil war. So, obviously, simply surviving in Sudan at the time was quite difficult. His uncle, a government employee, eventually helped him and his family flee to Uganda.

The Second Sudanese Civil War began in 1983 and ended in 2005.

Thon and his family relocated to Australia after a brief stint in Uganda. He went to a local school in Perth, where he could spend his free time with his own brother and cousins.

As a kid, he mostly played soccer. Because Thon and his brothers were taller than the average child, they had an advantage in almost every sport.

Fortunately, while playing with local youngsters in Perth, Edward Smith, a basketball coach and talent scout, discovered little Thon. Smith volunteered to drive Maker to Sydney to practice basketball with his aunt.

Thon began playing St. John Basketball Association in Sydney shortly after his aunt approved. Smith and Maker both traveled to the United States in 2011 to attend a basketball camp in Texas.

When Thon initially came to the United States, he was already an accomplished player. Edward persuaded him to enroll at Carlisle High School in Virginia, where he could continue his education and basketball skills.

In addition, Matur, his brother, and Makur, his cousin, are both professional basketball players. Maker, his younger brother, is also a soccer player. He also has an older sister named Ajak.

High School Career of Thon Maker

When Maker initially arrived in the United States in 2011, he had no idea he would be playing high school football. However, he believed that practicing in the United States rather than Australia would make it much simpler for him to break into the NBA.

Before enrolling at Carlisle School in Virginia, Thon attended two different schools in Louisiana. Edward Smith, his mentor, played a significant role in his admission.

He only played for the Carlisle school’s team for two years, but he had outstanding records in both seasons. Although he excelled in all areas, including scoring, rebounding, and blocking.

He averaged 22.2 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 4.5 blocks per game in his first and second seasons combined. Thon was also named Gatorade’s Best Player of the Year (Virginia).

However, he opted to leave Carlisle for the remainder of the seasons and enroll at the Athlete Institute in Ontario, Canada. At that institute, Edward Smith worked as an assistant coach.

He and his brother also attended Orangeville District Secondary School.

Until 2016, he continued to shine for the Athlete Institute and the Orangeville school. He did, however, leave Orangeville to attend the Nike Hoop Summit in Oregon in the meantime.

In the 2015-16 season, he returned to Orangeville Prep and played for them. His skill during his high school seasons was exceptional, and as a result, several universities in the United States were vying for his services.

He, on the other hand, decided to forego his entire collegiate career and enter the 2016 NBA draft.

A Professional Life

He was the 10th overall pick in the 2016 NBA draft by the Milwaukee Bucks. Maker became the first player picked in the NBA after the 2005 Collective Bargaining Agreement was signed with this selection.

He first made an impression on fans by performing admirably for the Bucks in the NBA Summer League. When he started laying during the regular NBA season, however, it all became diluted.

Although he had stronger performances in several games, his debut season was a complete catastrophe. Furthermore, he was given virtually little playing time by the team. In his rookie season, he only scored 4.0 points per game.

After his debut season, the athlete spent one and a half seasons with the Bucks but showed no signs of development. Despite the fact that he was given more playing time in the second season by the team’s management, he failed.

Before the NBA clubs abandoned up on him, he played two more seasons in the league. The Detroit Pistons gave him additional playing time in the hopes of helping him grow, but it was in vain.

Maker briefly played for the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2020-21 season before joining Hapoel Jerusalem, an Israeli club.
