Thurl Bailey was the seventh pick in the 1983 NBA draft by the Utah Jazz. He was a professional basketball player for 16 years, 12 of which he spent with the NBA. On November 25, 1991, he was traded by the Jazz to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for a 1992 second-round draft pick.

He played in the NBA for almost three seasons before leaving to play in the Greek League in 1994. He played for Polti Cantù in 1995–97 and Stefanel Milano in 1997–98 in the Italian League before joining the Jazz as a free agent on January 21, 1999.

Thurl Bailey announced his retirement at the end of the 1998–99 season. Bailey currently works as a public speaker, a broadcast analyst for the Utah Jazz and the University of Utah, actor, and singer/songwriter. He is currently on the bench alongside Kristen Kenney.
