PNA Steel was purchased by Platinum Equity in 2006, and two years later, it was sold to Reliance Steel Aluminium Co. for a $512 million profit. The San Diego Union-Tribute was eventually purchased by Tom for $30 million and sold for $ 110 million two years later. Tom had arranged more than 100 transactions through Platinum Equity by the end of 2009. 2011 saw the $325 million purchase of the Detroit Pistons and their previous arena, The Palace of Auburn Hills, by Platinum Equity and Tom. He renovated the arena for $10 million. Tom became the sole owner of Pistons in 2015 after obtaining Platinum Equity Shares.
