In the 1930s, his father, a Chinese Canadian immigrant, worked as a Chinese truck driver. Lorna Jean, his mother, was of Scottish-Irish and French heritage and worked as a waitress. His family also moved to Calgary, Alberta, when he was a child, where they resided in a conservative neighborhood.

Tommy Chong was a student at Crescent Heights High School but dropped out when he was sixteen years old. Tommy Chong has suffered from addiction all of his life. He was also found guilty of selling drug kits, principally bongs, through his son Paris’s “Nice Dreams Enterprises” marketing. In exchange for the court’s release of his wife and son, who were also charged, he agreed to plead guilty.

Tommy Chong began playing guitar in high school and was the guitarist for a group named “The Shades” in the early 1960s.
