On September 18, 1954, Thomas Hawley Tuberville was born in Camden, Arkansas. Tuberville is one of Olive Nell and Charles R. Tuberville Jr.’s three children. He left Harmony Grove High School in 1972 with a diploma.

Tuberville studied at the University of Southern Arkansas. In 1976, he graduated from SAU with a B.S. in physical education. He was honored with a spot in the Southern Arkansas University Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.

Career

He accepted a position as football coach at Hermitage High School after graduating. Tuberville served as head coach for two years before spending two years as an assistant coach. He went to Arkansas State University, where he worked as a football assistant coach from 1980 to 1984.

Tuberville began serving as a graduate assistant at the University of Miami in 1986. A few years later, he was named the university’s football team’s defensive coordinator. Along with Dwayne Johnson, he coached Ray Lewis and Warren Sapp, both of whom will be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

In 1994, Tuberville served as Texas A&M University’s defensive coordinator. The next year, Tuberville took over as the Ole Miss Rebels’ head coach at the University of Mississippi. After four seasons there, he went on to win the 1997 AP SEC Coach of the Year award.

In 1998, he served as the Auburn Tigers’ head football coach. The Tigers won eight straight bowl games while he was the coach. He received the APs SEC Coach of the Year award once more.

Tuberville was enshrined in the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. In 2010, Tuberville took over as Texas Tech University’s head football coach.

In 2017, he made the decision to stop coaching football. He later progressed to joining ESPN’s broadcast team full-time.
