After making his club debut in 1982, Mowbray was only 22 years old when he was chosen as Middlesbrough’s captain in 1986. Mowbray, also referred to as “Mogga” by Boro supporters, became well-known in Middlesbrough as a native who took the side from bankruptcy to the English football premier league in just two seasons. Mowbray came in seventh place when Middlesbrough legends wer  ranked chronologically by the local newspaper, The Evening Gazette. Former Middlesbrough manager Bruce Rioch once said something about Mowbray that gave rise to the name of the club magazine Fly Me to the Moon. In 1991, Mowbray paid £1 million to join Scottish club Celtic following 348 appearances for Boro.

With a 4-2 victory, Ipswich promoted to the FA Premier League. Mowbray played his last game as a player and made his Wembley debut during this match. In May 2004, Mowbray succeeded Bobby Williamson as Hibernian’s manager. He received high appreciation for his work, and in his debut season, the Scottish Football Writers Association named him manager of the year. On October 13, 2006, Mowbray appointed manager of West Bromwich Albion.

On March 3, 2015, Mowbray  named manager of Coventry City, and his contract  set to expire at the end of the 2014–15 campaign. Preventing the club from plunging into the fourth division for the first time since the late 1950s was also  Tony Mowbray’s first priority. On February 22, 2017, Mowbray also  named head coach of Blackburn Rovers. His contract was also  for 18 months, which ended at the end of the 2017–18 campaign.
