Hal Chapman Wingo III was born on September 19, 1963, in Greenwich, Connecticut, United States. In 1985, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Baylor University.

Hal Wingo, Trey’s father, is a former senior editor of Life Magazine and a co-founder of People Magazine. He is currently retired. Hal toured the world during his 33-year journalism career with Time Inc., covering major news issues such as the Vietnam War and interacting with some of the world’s most well-known persons in politics, entertainment, and sports.

Furthermore, Trey used to spend his vacations at his father’s office in New York City, where he worked as a copy boy, running scripts and moving items from one office to the next on the editing level. He is currently the co-host of ESPN Radio’s Golic and Wingo morning drive show. He helps ESPN cover the NFL by hosting all seven rounds of the NFL Draft, the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony, NFL PrimeTime, and NFL-themed SportsCenter specials.

Trey had previously worked for a number of sports networks before joining ESPN. He began his career as a sports producer for NBC’s News at Sunrise in New York in 1987, then went on to work for WICZ-TV in Binghamton from 1987 to 1988, then WMGC-TV as sports director from 1988 to 1990.

Following that, he worked for WFMZ-TV in Allentown, Pennsylvania, from 1990 to 1991, and then for KSDK-TV in St. Louis until joining ESPN.
