Woodley made his professional MMA debut on February 7, 2009, against Steve Schnider at Headhunter Production. He won the fight by submission in the first round. At Respect Is Earned, he defeated Jeff Carstens.

Woodley signed with Strikeforce in June 2009 and made his debut against Salvador Wood. He won the fight by submission in the first round. He fought nine more times for Strikeforce, winning eight and losing one.
