Ville Eino Ritola was born on January 18, 1896 in Grandy Duchy of Finland, Russia. Ville was a Russian, according to his nationality. His father, Johannes Ritola, and mother, Serafia Gear, gave birth to him. As a result, they were both farmers in western Findland near Seinajoki.
