Early Years, Family and Education

On February 9, 1946, Vince Papale was born in Chester, Pennsylvania. He will be seventy-eight years old in 2023. Francis J. Papale, his adored father, and Mother Almira Sage Papale welcomed him into the world. Janice is the name of his sister.

Education

Regarding his schooling, he went to Interboro High School in Prospect Park, where he excelled in football, basketball, and track and field. During his varsity football season, he was named an All-Delaware County Honorable Mention recipient.

As a track and field athlete, Papa competed in the long jump, triple jump, and pole vault. While competing on behalf of his school, he took home the District I (the suburbs of Philadelphia) pole vault large-schools title. Later, in the state tournament, he finished fourth.

His best pole vault result of 12 feet, 9 inches placed him among the “Top 10” PA high school vaulters of all time.

Papale was able to attend Saint Joseph’s University in Philadelphia because to a track and field scholarship. With a vault of 14 feet 6 inches, he took first place in a junior college development pole vault competition held by the United States Track & Field Federation (USTFF).

He finished first in the University Division of the Middle Atlantic Conference championships, despite never finishing on the podium in the Penn Relays or IC4A. In 1968, he earned his master’s degree in marketing/management science.

Professional Career of Vince Papale:

After graduating from college, Vince Papale started playing professionally for the semi-professional Aston Green Knights of the Seaboard Football League. In addition, he taught middle school business and coached a junior varsity football team at Interboro High School from 1968 to 1974.

In the spring of 1974, Papale left his position as a teacher in order to test out for the Philadelphia Bell. He was a member of the team for the next two seasons after being added to the starting lineup. That season, he broke the record with nine receptions for 121 yards at an average of 13.4 yards per catch.

In 1975, he only caught one pass, but it was for 49 yards and a touchdown. He spent both of his seasons with the Bell as a “special teams” star.

Following his termination from Bell, Papale was employed in a bar. He also played “rough touch” football in the bar leagues. It was during this time that Dick Vermeil, the general manager of the Philadelphia Eagles, invited him to a private workout with Jim Murray.

When Papale signed with the Eagles at age thirty, he became the oldest rookie in NFL history to never have played collegiate ball. In 1976, 1977, and 1978, he played 14 games as a wide receiver and member of the special teams. He had two fumble recoveries and one 15-yard reception in his time with the organization.

A shoulder injury put a stop to his career in 1978. Following that, he worked as a radio and television announcer for eight years until he made the decision to go into commercial mortgage banking.

He holds the positions of secretary and treasurer for the NFL Alumni Association’s Philadelphia Chapter in addition to his current positions as senior account executive for higher education marketing and regional director of marketing for Sallie Mae.

In the Ericson Core-directed film “Invincible” from 2006, Mark Wahlberg portrayed Vince, while Elizabeth played Janet. Both the reviews from reviewers and the box office performance of the film were favourable.

Following the release of the film, Papale narrated the tale in his own words in a memoir titled “Invincible: My Journey from Fan to NFL Team Captain.” He and Janet coauthored the book “Be Invincible! A Playbook For Reaching Your Full Potential” in 2011.
