Early Life

Mary Alice and Dan Davis gave birth to Viola on August 11, 1965. In St. Matthews, South Carolina, Viola Davis was born at her grandparents’ home. Her family moved to Central Falls, Rhode Island, when she was barely two months old. She is the fifth of five siblings. Her oldest sister and brother remained with her grandparents when the family moved to Central Falls, Rhode Island. She remembers living in filthy, condemned apartments plagued with rats in her earliest recollections.

Viola Davis attributes her interest in and association with the arts to Central Falls High School. During her adolescence, she was a participant in the government TRIO Upward Bound and TRIO Student Support programs. During her senior year of high school, a director was impressed by her ability. Later in life, Viola Davis attended Rhode Island College and majored in ‘theatre.’ She received an honorary doctorate in Fine Arts from the college in 2002, after graduating in 1988.

Career and Professional Life

The trajectory of Viola Davis’s career has been steadily increasing. She was awarded a Screen Actors Guild card in 1996 for her outstanding performance as a nurse in the film ‘The Substance of Fire.’ She earned a Drama Desk Award and a Tony Award in 2001 for her role in the film King Hedley II. For her outstanding performance in ‘Intimate Apparel’ in 2004, she received yet another Drama Desk Award. She appeared in a number of films directed by well-known filmmakers of the day. She also provided the voice of a parole board interrogator in the George Clooney film “Ocean’s Eleven,” although she received no credit for it. In the films Antwone Fisher and Kate & Leopold, Viola makes a brief appearance.

She appeared in multiple roles on television shows like Law and Order: Special Victims Unit. Century City and Traveler are two short series in which  Davis has a leading role. She also appears in Law & Order: Criminal Intent’s “Badge” episode as a guest star.

In 2008, she appeared in the film adaptation of the Broadway play Doubt alongside Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. The most amazing aspect of this picture is that, although having only one scene, she had a significant role. Due to her outstanding performance in the film, she received multiple nominations, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe.

On June 30, 2009, Viola Davis was officially inducted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. On June 13, she received her second Tony Award of 2010. Viola Davis was nominated for two Screen Actors Guild Awards, a Golden Globe Award, and a BAFTA for the same role in August 2011.

Viola Davis was named one of the world’s most influential people and Film Actress of the Year in 2012 by Time and Glamour magazines, respectively. In 2013, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s Walk of Fame Committee recognized her with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

When Viola Davis won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series on September 20, 2015, she made history as the first black woman of any nationality to win the award. In both 2015 and 2016, she was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Drama Series.
