Early Years & Age:
On March 2, 1938, Mikhail Yakovlevich Zaitsev and Maria Ivanovna Zaitseva welcomed Zaitsev into the world at Ivanovo. While his mother worked as a cleaner and laundress, his father was a prisoner in one of Joseph Stalin’s labor camps and a victim of his purges. From 1945 to 1952, he was a student at Ivanovo Secondary School No. 22.[4] Due to his father’s designation as a state-designated enemy of the people, Zaitsev was denied entry to an industrial academy, a theatrical school, and a school for aspiring pilots.
He began his studies at the University of Chemistry and Technology’s Faculty of Applied Arts in Ivanovo in 1952, where he developed an interest in manufacturing and attained the credentials necessary to work as a textile artist. Vyacheslav Zaitsev earned an honors degree from the university in 1956. He moved to Moscow in 1956 after deciding that working with textiles was what he wanted to do. He enrolled in the Moscow Textile Institute’s programs and earned a bachelor’s degree in painting and design there in 1962.

Zaitsev and Valentin Yudashkin controlled the fashion industry during the Soviet era, and he was compared to other well-known fashion designers like Christian Lacroix, Christian Dior, Pierre Cardin, and Yves Saint Laurent. Although it was believed that Zaitsev could compete with Western designers, the only country outside of the USSR where he could do business was Czechoslovakia under the communist government. Russian-born fashion historian and designer Alexandre Vassiliev, who now lives in Paris, asserted that “if he had the opportunity to show his collections abroad, he would have most likely been a world-famous brand.” In March 1962, he began his position as the creative director of the experimental technological Mosoblsovnarkhoza garment factory, where he oversaw the production of women’s clothing for stores in Moscow and the surrounding area.
