He has claimed that the earth was warmer in the 1930s than it is now, and that the warming is due to sunspots and exchange with warmer oceans, among other views that are in opposition to science.

In 2011, Joe noted that, as he had predicted three years earlier, the world average temperature was declining and, by 2030, will return to levels recorded in the late 1970s due to the “triple-crown of cooling.” According to Bastardi, the fundamental rule of thermodynamics prohibits the idea that carbon dioxide can be the cause of global warming. “CO₂ cannot cause global warming. It doesn’t mix well with the atmosphere. Also, its specific gravity is 1.5 times that of the rest of the atmosphere. It heats and cools much quicker. So it cannot- it literally cannot cause global warming.”
