Professional life and career

Willie played college football at Grambling State University before starting his professional career. After that, he was signed by the Houston Oilers of the American Football League (AFL) but was released during training camp. In 1979, he was hired by the Denver Broncos as a starter, and in his second season, he was named to the All-AFL team.

Willie began his career as a cornerback for the Oakland Raiders in 1967, after three years with the Broncos. He was a three-time Super Bowl champion, four-time Pro Bowler, three-time First-team All-AFL, and three-time Second-team All-AFL during his career.

Then, from 1970 through 1988, he worked as a defensive backs coach with the Oakland Raiders. He even went on to coach Long Beach State and Jordan High School. From 1995 to 2019, he was the Oakland Raiders’ Director of Staff Development.
