Career:

Allen got his start in show business when he was very young, penning jokes for “The Herb Shriner Program,” an early chat show on television. He went on to work as a scriptwriter for Ed Sullivan, “The Tonight Show” (before Johnny Carson), and Sid Caesar shortly after. He also contributed to “Candid Camera.” Allen chose to become a stand-up comedian in 1961 and began performing in small clubs in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village neighborhood. In the 1960s, he released three comedy albums and was nominated for a Grammy for his comedy CD “Woody Allen” (1964). His next career move took him to Broadway, where he penned plays such as “Don’t Drink The Water” (1966) and “Play It Again, Sam” (1969), which both had successful runs and were well-received by the audience.

Film Career:

“What’s New, Pussycat?” (1965) was Allen’s first picture, for which he created the screenplay. He was apparently dissatisfied with the finished product, which is why, with the exception of the film adaptation of “Play It Again, Sam,” he went on to direct every subsequent picture he wrote (1972). “What’s Up, Tiger Lily?” (1966), which he co-wrote with Mickey Rose, was his first picture as a director. Allen has acted in many of his films, including “Take the Money and Run,” in addition to directing, producing, and scripting them (1969).

Allen has over 75 writing credits, over 50 directing credits, and nearly 50 acting credits to his name.  “Manhattan” (1979), “Hannah and Her Sisters” (1986), “Crimes and Misdemeanors” (1989), “Match Point” (2005), and “Midnight in Paris” (2006) are some of his other films (2011). According to Allen’s own view, his best films are “Stardust Memories” (1980), “The Purple Rose of Cairo” (1985), and “Match Point” (2005). His additional awards and honors include nine British Academy Film Awards, the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement, and a Tony Award nomination, in addition to the four Academy Awards he earned for “Annie Hall.”
