He worked as a busboy and a bartender when he initially came in the country. In the late 1970s, he started performing stand-up comedy. He thereby received the surname “Smirnoff.” In the 1980s, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he frequently appeared at The Comedy Store.

In the 1984 film Moscow on the Hudson, he made his acting debut as Lev. The same year, he made an appearance in the movie The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. Smirnoff later starred in the 1985 comedy Brewster’s Millions.
