At the former Odesa Pedagogical University in Ukraine, Yakov Smirnoff taught art. He was also a comedian who occasionally performed aboard ships. He worked as a busboy and a bartender when he initially came in the country. In the late 1970s, he started performing stand-up comedy. He thereby received the surname “Smirnoff.” In the 1980s, he relocated to Los Angeles, where he frequently appeared at The Comedy Store.
