He received honors for being an all-American and all-PIAA performer when a senior at Downingtown. He was also chosen as the Ches-Mont League MVP. Steffen played for the Union U17 team in 2012 and was an important component of the Philadelphia Union Academy.

In addition to future professionals Connor Maloney, Zach Pfeffer, Drew Skundrich, Brian White, and Zach Zandi, as well as future Penn State kicker Joey Julius, he was a member of the winning 2012 Generation Adidas Cup team that defeated the Toronto FC Academy in a penalty shootout.
