On December 24, 1972, Zandile Mafe was born in Mahikeng, North West. His father was a security guard, and his mother passed away when he was a young child. His stepmother  also did not have a job. He moved to the Western Cape in quest of greener pastures, and he has two brothers. Before moving to Khayelitsha, Cape Town, where he is also said to have committed the murder, he lived in Langa for five years. In 2000, Mafe relocated to Cape Town from Mahikeng, in the North West, reportedly in pursuit of better pastures. Prior to attending Sebopiwa Middle School, Zandile attended Signal Hill Primary School. He also  completed his schooling at Lapologang Secondary School in the eleventh grade. In 2000, he moved to Cape Town.

It wasn’t long before Zandile Mafe  recognized as the likely arsonist. After he allegedly set fire to the South African Parliament building, he quickly gained notoriety. Many questioned also him about the reason behind it and his mental state. On January 2, 2022, a huge fire completely destroyed the Houses of Parliament in Cape Town, South Africa. The National Assembly chamber was quickly affected by the fire that started in the offices on the third floor.

The event described as “terrible and devastating” by President Ramaphosa. For hours, firefighters battled to put it out. Important documents  lost, but nobody  harmed. It  said that Zandile, the main suspect,  captured in the precinct as soon as the fire started. It  reported that he came into via a back window. The day the fire started, no security guards were on duty. On January 3, 2022, investigators and the media broke into his Khayelitsha residence. They were searching for evidence linking him to the fire in the parliament. They discovered political newspaper articles from the 1980s, an ANC T-shirt, and banners calling for Janusz Walus’ release. Walus  found guilty of killing Chris Hani.

It was his first time appearing in court on Tuesday, January 4, 2022. Zandile  rumored to be homeless. His attorney refuted these accusations, claiming that he had lived regularly in his Site B Khayelitsha home for the previous six years. Even after submitting multiple applications, the arson also suspect  not granted bail.
