Ülkerspor, a Turkish club, scouted Zaza while he was a teenager. He was picked in the second round of the 2003 NBA Draft by the Orlando Magic. Soon after, he was moved to the Milwaukee Bucks for the 2004-05 season, where as a reserve, he averaged 6.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.
He signed a contract with the Atlanta Hawks in 2005 and became the team’s starting center. He averaged 11.7 points per game and 7.9 rebounds per game. During his time with the Atlanta Hawks, the nickname reminded him of Balboa.
He got a contract with Galatasaray of the Turkish Basketball League in 2011, but returned to the Hawks a year later. During the 2015-16 season, he was traded to the Dallas Mavericks and made his debut in a 111-95 win over the Phoenix Suns.
In 2016, he signed a contract with the Golden State Warriors, which marked a turning point in his career. With a 117-101 win over the Brooklyn Nets, he started the season with 15 points and 14 rebounds.
In the same seasons, Golden State won the NBA Finals, defeating the Cavaliers in the finals. He retired from the game in 2019 and joined the Golden State Warriors’ basketball department as an office consultant.
