In Xilugezhuang Village, Dayao Town, Muping District, Yantai City, China, Zhou was born in 1988. Apple and cherry farmers Zhou Weijan and his wife are her parents.
Prior to the London Olympics, Lulu’s parents had never seen her compete. They later made their first international trip to see their daughter win gold after someone covered their travel costs. Coach Shi Du of the Muping District Sports school first noticed her in 1999. Shi Du was looking for a student for weightlifting but hasn’t had any luck. At a sporting event, Zhou took part in the shotput competition. Shi Du made up his mind to take her under his wings the moment he noticed her tall and powerful build.
But once more, Shi Du needed her family’s approval. He had to speak to her grandma since when he went to see her parents, they weren’t at home.
She allowed her grandchild to play despite not knowing what weight lighting was since she trusted the coach.

Career of Zhou Lulu:
Zhou trained under coach Xiandong for three years at the Yantai Sports School. In 2003, she transferred to the weightlifting squad for the women of Shandong Province, under the direction of Zhijun.
Zhou gained notoriety in 2007 after demonstrating her skills twice in a row. She was second in the national urban games, to start. Lulu also triumphed in the Asian youth championship.
She finished fourth in the national weightlifting competition in 2008. In the 2009 national competition, Lulu broke the record and came in second. She lifted 148 kg in the same year, shattering the previous record for women lifting 75 kg. With a combined score of 327 kg, Zhou won two medals in the clean and jerk event at the 2011 World Weightlifting Championships.
Olympics
In the 2012 national women’s weightlifting championships and Olympic trials, Zhou Lulu prevailed with a grab of 145 kg, a clean and jerk of 183 kg, and a total score of 328 kg. At the London Olympics, she outperformed Tatiana Kashirina of Russia to win gold in the 75 kg division and break a world record.
Additionally, it was the fifth gold medal won by the Chinese weightlifting team at the Olympics, giving the Chinese delegation a total of 29 gold medals. She achieved the Grand Slam in weightlifting with her victory, winning the Olympic and World Championships as well as a World Record. Lulu set a new Asian mark for the snatch with 142 kg and a world record for the clean and jerk with 192 kg at the 2014 Asian Games.
Her final score of 334 kg was enough to win her the gold medal with ease. Zhou hasn’t appeared in public since 2014, which is a shame.
