Where was John Brennan born?
Born in North Bergen, New Jersey, John Brennan was the son of Owen and Dorothy (Dunn) Brennan. His Irish father, a metal forger, moved to New Jersey from County Roscommon in the Irish Republic in 1948. Before continuing his education at Saint Joseph of the Palisades High School in West New York, New Jersey, he attended Immaculate Heart of Mary Elementary School.
Brennan graduated with a B.A. in political theory from Fordham University. He cast his 1976 presidential election ballot for Gus Hall, a candidate for the Communist Party of the USA. After leaving Fordham, Brennan enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin, where he graduated in 1980 with a Master of Arts in government with a Middle East studies concentration. He speaks Arabic effectively. His tests included a less rigorous year spent studying Arabic abroad and enrolling in courses at the American University in Cairo.
He saw a New York Times advertisement for the CIA’s recruitment while commuting to Fordham University. His “hunger for new experiences” and desire for public service led him to the conclusion that working for the CIA would be a good fit. He made a CIA application in 1980. John acknowledged during a lie detector test that he had voted for the Communist Party rival four years prior while submitting his application. He was surprisingly still acknowledged, and he later said that he found it inspiring that the CIA valued free speech.

Career
Brennan started his extensive career with the CIA in 1980 in response to a job posting in The New York Times. He worked for the State Department as a political officer at the American international haven in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia, after being appointed to the Directorate of Intelligence (DI) in 1981. He was proposed for the positions of head of station in Saudi Arabia, chief of staff to CIA Director George Tenet, and official chief of the CIA after serving as the daily knowledge briefer for US President Bill Clinton.
After a brief retirement from the CIA, he was proposed for the position of Homeland Security Advisor in January 2009. In May 2011, Brennan was present in the Situation Room when the US carried out the military operation that killed Osama bin Laden. He was directly in charge of introducing policies involving the use of drones to combat terrorism while he was employed by Homeland Security.
His familiarity with aggressive cross-examination tactics used by the Bush administration was questioned when President Obama nominated him in 2013 to head the CIA. Although he insisted he wasn’t a member of the hierarchy at the time, the Senate later approved his nomination.
Brennan was in charge of the CIA’s investigation into potential Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. The CIA and other intelligence agencies came to the conclusion that Russia had made a concerted effort to sway the election in favor of Republican Donald Trump, who ultimately defeated Democrat Hillary Clinton.
After Obama’s administration ended in 2017, Brennan resigned from the CIA. He had severe doubts about Trump, even referring to him as “treasonous” at one point. Brennan’s actions, according to Trump, were “whimsical,” and he denied any wrongdoing. In August 2018, he rejected Brennan’s unique status. Though some acknowledged that Trump’s actions went against Brennan’s theory.
