Amber Ruffin (Amber Mildred Ruffin) was born on January 9, 1979 in Omaha, Nebraska. As the youngest daughter of her parents, she grew up in a family of five children.

She was a student at Omaha Benson High School. Ruffin has always loved comedy, but she didn’t get her start on stage until 2001, when she began performing in Omaha theaters.

Life’s Journey

After spending some time performing for audiences in Omaha, she felt it was time to take things up a notch in order to gain more expertise and professionalism. This line of thought influenced her decision to move to Chicago and join the iO Theater to hone her improv skills.

Boom Chicago, a well-known Chicago comedy troupe, took her on a tour of Amsterdam. While there, she performed in theaters and on various stages, as well as writing extensively for the troupe.

When she returned to the United States, she became a member of The Second City, a long-running improv comedy troupe that performed in Chicago and Denver. Jenny Hagel, a fellow writer on Late Night with Seth Meyers, became a friend of hers when she was with The Second City.

Ruffin relocated to Los Angeles, California in search of new opportunities in comedy writing and performance. She later joined the comedy troupe RobotDown, which specializes in performing sketches on YouTube. Soon after, she was cast in an episode of Key & Peele, the Peabody Award-winning and multiple Primetime Emmy Award-winning sketch comedy TV series.

Amber tried out for a role on the popular television comedy show Saturday Night Live in 2014. She was not cast in the role for which she auditioned, but she was hired as a writer for Late Night with Seth Meyers. She accepted the position and has been writing for the show ever since.

Amber Ruffin’s role as a writer on Late Night with Seth Meyers has opened up many doors for her. She contributes to the Comedy Central show Detroiters as a writer. She also frequently narrates a Comedy Central show called Drunk History. Ruffin was nominated for a Writer Guild of America award for Best Comedy/Variety Series in 2017.

He moved to the United States with Amber Ruffin after they married and has been living in New York ever since.
