Anna Gutu  is American mountaineer .She had a passion for reaching the highest peaks in the planet. Few women have attempted to climb all 14 eight-thousanders, or mountains that rise more than 8,000 meters (26,246 feet) above sea level. She was one of those few women. She and her guide, Mingmar Sherpa, perished in a devastating avalanche on Mount Shishapangma in Tibet on October 7, 2023. After the same catastrophe, American climber Gina Marie Rzucidlo and her guide Tenjen Sherpa are still missing.

Childhood and  Education

In 1991, Anna Gutu was born in the US to Ukrainian immigrants. Her parents were the Romanian language and history teachers Valentina Petrov-Sârghi and Pavel Petrov. She was raised in a bilingual and multicultural home where she picked up Romanian and English. From a young age, she also had an interest in seeing new places and learning about different cultures. At the University of California, Berkeley, Anna majored in international relations and minored in Russian. Following her 2013 graduation with honors, she was awarded a Fulbright grant to spend a year studying in Ukraine. In addition, she worked as a freelance journalist and translator, writing about social issues, politics, and human rights.

Professional life and Career

When Anna Gutu went up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with some companions in 2016, she fell in love with mountaineering. She was motivated to set more challenging goals for herself by the mountain’s beauty and challenge. She attended Alpine Ascents International’s mountaineering school in Seattle, where she learned high-altitude climbing techniques. After that, Gutu made a number of expeditions to some of the most well-known and challenging mountains on Earth, such as Mount Elbrus in Russia, Mount Aconcagua in Argentina, Mount Denali in Alaska, Mount Vinson in Antarctica, and Mount Everest-Lhotse in Nepal. In addition, she scaled many other Himalayan peaks, including as Makalu, Annapurna, Manaslu, Dhaulagiri, Cho Oyu, Kanchenjunga, and Gasherbrum.

On her Instagram account, @anyatraveler, she shared pictures and videos of her climbs along with her gratitude and enthusiasm at being able to pursue her passion. Anna also talked about the difficulties and advantages of climbing in her Facebook profile, Anna Gutu. She aimed to become the first female American climber to reach the summit of all 14 eight-thousanders in one season. On October 4, 2023, Anna reached the summit of Cho Oyu, her thirteenth eight-thousander, and was almost there. Mount Shishapangma was the only mountain standing in her way of her objective.

Cause of Anna Gutu’s Death

Tragically, Anna Gutu’s life   cut short while she was climbing Shishapangma, the fourteenth-highest mountain in the world. She valiantly battled the harsh conditions of the Himalayas, only to   trapped in a devastating avalanche that ultimately claimed her life. This tragedy happened on the slopes of Shishapangma, where a powerful natural force killed Anna and her guide, Mingmar Sherpa. The climbing community is in mourning for this accomplished and fearless climber, whose untimely death  caused by her drive to reach new heights.
