Joseph “Jo Mersa” Marley, the son of eight-time Grammy winner Stephen Marley and the grandson of the renowned Bob Marley, died at the age of 31.

Jo Mersa Marley (Grandson of Legend Bob Marley) was discovered unresponsive in his vehicle on Tuesday morning (December 27), having “passed tragically unexpectedly after an asthma episode,” according to South Florida radio station WZPP.

Marley, who was born on March 12, 1991, shot to notoriety with his 2016 hit ‘Burn It Down,’ which included his brother Yohan. In addition, the singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist published an EP titled ‘Comfortable‘ in 2014, followed by a first album titled ‘Eternal’ in 2021.
In a 2014 interview with Rolling Stone, Marley remarked of his then-fledging career. : “I am one of the new generation of Marleys, but I am also exploring at the same time. My intention is to try something new with my roots.”
“It was a pretty amazing thing, seeing those folks coming around to the house and how the whole work process would happen,” he said of how his craft was influenced by the Marley family’s musical legacy. I’d return home and try to finish my homework, but I’d get distracted and go look in the studio. You’d constantly want to come in and out quickly to see what was going on.”

Responding to the news of Marley’s death, Olivia Grange – Jamaica’s minister of culture, gender, entertainment and sport – stated in a statement: “I am profoundly saddened by the news that artiste Joseph Marley, son of Reggae star, Stephen Marley and grand son of Reggae super star, Bob Marley has gone.
“I express my heartfelt condolences to Stephen, Jo’s mom, Kerry, the Marleys and other family members. My heartfelt condolences go out to Joseph’s friends and acquaintances, as well as the Reggae music fraternity and fans worldwide.
“His untimely demise at the early age of 31 [years old] is a big loss to the music as we turn to the future generation. May he find Eternal Peace as we mourn his passing at this season of goodwill. And when we celebrate our affection for one another with family and friends.”

Jamaican opposition leader Mark J. Golding also paid tribute to Marley, writing in a statement, “I’ve just learned of the awful demise of Joseph ‘Jo Mersa’ Marley. At barely 31 years old, he is a talented young reggae artist. Son of Stephen Marley and grandson of Bob Marley. The loss of a child is a tragic blow that no parent should have to endure; my heartfelt condolences go out to Stephen [and] the entire family.”
