After being released from prison, The Serpent, a French serial murderer who was convicted of killing several tourists in Asia in the 1970s, has left Nepal.

The 78-year-old Charles Sobhraj was released after a court found in his favor due to his age and good behavior.

He was imprisoned in Nepal for 19 years for the 1975 murder of two North Americans.

In India and Thailand, Sobhraj preyed primarily on young tourists from the West who were traveling the hippie route.

After being sent back to France on Friday, he would reportedly be unable to visit Nepal for at least ten years.

In Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, the legendary killer was concurrently serving two sentences of 20 years each for the 1975 slayings of an American woman named Connie Jo Bronzich and her Canadian traveling companion, Laurent Carriere. His tragedy was told in the television drama The Serpent.

He had previously been sentenced to a high-security facility in 2014 for killing Carriere after being found guilty in two separate trials.

But on Wednesday, the Nepalese Supreme Court mandated Sobhraj’s release after his legal team had successfully petitioned for a reduction in his sentence due to his ill condition.

Inmates who have demonstrated high moral character and served out 75% of their sentence term may also be released under a provision of Nepalese law.

According to AFP, the judgement stated that keeping him in prison continually was against his human rights and listed frequent heart disease medication as additional reason for his release. In 2017, he underwent heart surgery.

Sobhraj said he felt “wonderful” about being liberated but will take legal action against the Nepalese government in an interview with AFP before his departure on Friday.
