When J Mays at Ford offered him a job, Chip finally left Sternberger Designs to work there, but Boyd Coddington persuaded him to stay. Then he started working full-time, and at Coddington’s business, Hot Rods by Boyd, he finally became president.
Chip put in a lot of time at Hot Rods by Boyd. When Hot Rods by Boys was poised to file for bankruptcy in 1998, Chip departed the business. He and his wife moved to Huntington Beach, California, and opened a new company there. Chip established the design and automobile company Foose Designs.

After the TLC Channel aired a program on Foose’s design and building of the Speedbird, a modified 2002 Thunderbird, he gained notoriety. TLC released Overhaulin’, a show featuring Chip Foose, not long after the documentary aired. Over the course of five seasons, Chip refurbished more than 80 vehicles. Along with other well-known clients, he has produced graphics for NASCAR.
