Christopher D’Olier Reeve was born in New York City on September 25, 1952. His mother, Barbara Lamb, worked as a journalist, while his father, Franklin D’Olier Reeve, was a writer and scholar in addition to being a teacher.

Reeve’s parents split when he was four, and he relocated to Princeton, New Jersey, with his mother and younger brother. He went to Princeton Country Day School, where he was a standout student as well as a talented athlete who excelled in tennis, hockey, soccer, and baseball.

When he was nine years old, Reeve began acting at Princeton Country Day School. He made his acting debut in a school production of The Yeomen of the Guard, and went on to perform in a number of additional school productions. He began his acting career as an apprentice at the Williamstown Theatre Festival, a summer theater camp in Williamstown, Massachusetts, when he was 15 years old.

Reeve pondered pursuing a career in acting after graduating from high school in 1970, but finally decided to go to college and get a degree first. Princeton University, Columbia University, Northwester University, Brown University, and Cornell University were among the top universities where he was accepted.

He chose Cornell because he believed the lure of professional acting would be too powerful if he went to school in New York City. He did, however, continue performing as a student at Cornell, where he joined the theater department. In Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, he played Hamlet, and in Waiting for Godot, he played Pozzo.

While concentrating on his studies at Cornell, Reeve decided to work with Stark Hesseltine, a well-known New York City agent who had written Reeve a letter after seeing him in a production of A Month in the Country.

While still pursuing his degree at Cornell, Hesseltine began representing Reeve, who began coming to New York City once a month to develop relationships in the city. Reeve toured in a production of Forty Carats over the summer after his freshman year and obtained a contract with the San Diego Shakespeare Festival during his sophomore year, proving that this was a successful plan.

Reeve persuaded the professors at Cornell to allow him to finish his degree at the famous Juilliard School in New York City in order to focus on acting during his junior year. He and Robin Williams were both accepted to Juilliard’s Advanced Program after a difficult audition. He was able to graduate from Cornell in 1974 after spending a year at Juilliard.

Reeve appeared in various plays, soap operas, and movies during his first few years out of college. His major break came in 1978, when he was cast as Clark Kent/Superman in Richard Donner’s Superman picture.

Reeve and Exton opted to divorce peacefully after a ten-year relationship, keeping shared custody of their children. Reeve met Dana Morosini, a singer and actor, in 1987 and married her in 1992. William, Reeve’s third child with Morosini, was born in the same year.

Equestrian Accident

Following a debilitating equestrian accident, Reeve’s life changed dramatically. Since learning to ride for a film role in 1985, Reeve has developed into a superb horseman. He’d started competing in dressage events. Reeve was finishing a jump in 1995 when his horse abruptly halted, hurling him off the horse and shattering his first and second vertebrae.

Reeve spent several days in the hospital before regaining consciousness and learning that he was paralyzed from the neck down. Months of physical treatment and rehabilitation followed. Reeve stayed devoted to an intense training routine, which allowed him to restore some little finger movements and sense a wider temperature range.

Following his accident, he received an estimated 400,000 letters from admirers and well-wishers.

Life After the Accident

Reeve’s time in rehabilitation prompted him to become interested in disability rights and legislation. He was chosen Chairman of the American Paralysis Association and Vice Chairman of the National Organization on Disability at the end. Reeve also established the Christopher Reeve Foundation, which promotes research into paralysis remedies.

During this time, Reeve authored both of his memoirs and stayed devoted to his family. After going into a coma, Reeve died on October 9, 2004. He had two funerals, one at his Connecticut church and the other at the Juilliard School. Dana Reeve tragically died of lung cancer in 2006.
