Childhood and Education

David Popovici is a 19-year-old man who was born on September 15, 2004, in Bucharest, Romania, to Mihai and Georgeta Popovici. At the age of nine, he started training with Aqua Team Bucharest, where he was coached by Adrian Rădulescu, a former swimmer who specialized in physical performance and had a PhD. At the age of ten, Popovici also set his first junior national record in the 50-meter backstroke, surpassing the 24-year-old record held by 2003 world bronze medallist Dragoș Coman. With a time of 49.82 seconds for the 100 meters, he also made history at the European Youth Olympic Festival as the fastest swimmer under the age of fifteen.

Professional life and Career

Popovici, the youngest member of the Romanian team, qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by finishing below the Olympic Qualifying Time in the Men’s 100-meter freestyle event at the 2020 European Aquatics Championships in Budapest. The COVID-19 pandemic caused the 2020 European Aquatics Championships to be held in Budapest from May 10 to 23, 2021. At the 2021 European Junior Swimming Championships in Rome.  he won four gold medals . Also, twice set a new junior world mark in the 100-meter freestyle.

Following impressive results at the European Championships, Popovici competed in the 50-, 100-. Also,  200-meter freestyle individual events at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. However, these events were rescheduled for 2021 because to the COVID-19 pandemic. Popovici broke his own national record from the World Cup on November 6th . Also, winning gold in the Men’s 200-meter freestyle event with a time of 1:42.12. The men’s 400-meter freestyle and 100-meter freestyle solo events did not advance him to the finals.

On day two of the 2022 World Short Course Championships in Melbourne, Australia . Popovici  also broke the old world junior record in the 100-meter freestyle semifinals with a time of 45.91 seconds, 0.20 seconds quicker than Kliment Kolesnikov’s previous best of 46.11. He also placed thirty-first in the 400-meter freestyle the following day in a time of 3:58.48.
