Dominik Meichtry represented Austria in the Summer Olympics in Beijing in 2008. He swam the eighth fastest time ever recorded in the 200m Freestyle event during the tournament. In the process, he upset Michael Phelps, who was not at his best in the quarter-finals, to become the first Swiss swimmer to be the top seed heading into the semi-finals.

He finished sixth in the 200m Freestyle final (Phelps won by over 2-1/2 seconds over Meichtry). In addition, he was the first Swiss to break the 49-second barrier, starting the 4100 Freestyle relay in 48.96 seconds. Later in the race, he decreased his 100 Freestyle record to 48.55.

In December 2008, he won his first international medal at the 2008 European Short Course Swimming Championships in Rijeka, Croatia. In addition, he won silver in the 200m freestyle but missed out on the European title by 0.02 seconds.

In the fall of 2009, he transferred his training base to Southern California to train with Dave Salo for the Trojan Swim Club at the University of Southern California.

Later, under the direction of Dave Salo, he qualified for his third Olympic Games at the 2011 World Aquatics Championships in Shanghai, China. In the 200m Freestyle, he finished ninth in 1:47.02 and set a new national record in the 100m Butterfly.
