Eddie Murphy’s Success Tip: ‘Keep Will Smith’s Wife’s Name Out of Your F*cking Mouth

While accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Award, Eddie Murphy gave some advise to the next generation of comedians on how to avoid getting smacked.

Almost a year has passed since Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards, yet the memorable event still lingers large in Hollywood. Smith did not attend the Golden Globes after failing to receive a nomination for his performance in “Emancipation,” but he ended up being the punchline to one of the night’s most memorable acceptance speeches.

Eddie Murphy received the Cecil B. DeMille Prize this year, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s lifetime achievement award, which has previously gone to Steven Spielberg and Meryl Streep. The comedic great kept his speech mostly on point, keeping controlled and professional while reflecting on his illustrious career.

“I’ve been doing this for a long time,” Murphy stated at the end of his acceptance speech. “But before I go, I’d like to say something to all the aspiring dreamers and artists in the room tonight. I’d like to inform you that there is a certain plan you can follow to obtain success, prosperity, longevity, and peace of mind. There is a blueprint, and I followed it throughout my career.”

When Murphy proceeded to dish out his hard-earned advice, many of the room’s up-and-coming comedians were almost certainly listening carefully.

“It’s quite straightforward. “You simply perform these three things,” Murphy explained. “Fill out your tax forms. Take care of your own affairs. And keep the name of Will Smith’s wife out of your fucking mouth!”

Though the NBC program was able to neatly move away from the vulgarity, the gathering erupted in laughter and applause as he continued the joke.

Many fans will undoubtedly be curious about Smith’s reaction to the remark, given that the entire affair with Chris Rock started with Smith being upset by a joke. Murphy was questioned by the press after accepting the prize if he had discussed the slap with either Rock or Smith.

“No, I haven’t,” he replied. “However, I adore both of them.
