Katherine Flora Rantzen (née Leverson, 1911–2005) and Henry Barnato Rantzen had Esther on June 22, 1940. (1902–1992). Hertfordshire-born Esther Born Esther Louise Rantzen. Jewish. Priscilla N. Taylor was her younger sister. Her great-great-grandfather immigrated to Britain and became a cap-maker in Spitalfields in the late 1850s. Rantzen great-grandfather relocated to a better area with the support of his brother-in-law, Barney Barnato (born Barnett Isaacs), a wealthy diamond merchant in South Africa. Her dad was Barnato. Her wealthy maternal great-grandfather, Montague Leverson, founded the West London Synagogue. Gerald Finzi’s maternal grandpa was Montague Leverson. She is British yet mixed-race. She cut her 82nd birthday cake on 22 June 2023.

In 1950, she left Buckley Country Day School in New York. She then attended North London Collegiate School, an all-girls independent school in Edgware, North London. • In 2013, Esther founded the geriatric organization The Silver Line. The Silver Line’s remote volunteers call older individuals weekly to befriend them.
