Career

Beginning in 1969 and continuing through 1971, Gary Barnett served as a graduate assistant coach for Al Onofrio at the University of Missouri. He won conference championships and made it to the semifinals in 1980 and 1981 while playing for Air Academy High School in Colorado Springs, where he later worked as a coach. Nine of his 11 years as a coach were spent in leadership positions.

Gary took over as the Fort Lewis College head coach in Durango, Colorado after that, but two years later he relocated to Colorado to work as Bill McCartney’s assistant coach. As the offensive coordinator for his team in the 1991 Orange Bowl, he captured his first and only national championship.

After years of losses, Gary took over as head coach of Northwestern in 1991, and he guided the team to its best season. They won the Big Ten Conference for the first time since 1936 under his leadership, and in 1949 they made their first Rose Bowl appearance. The following season, they won the Florida Citrus Bowl. This led to his being recognized by being inducted into the Northwestern University Athletic Hall of Fame. Prior to joining Colorado, he played for Northwestern for eight seasons.

Gary joined Colorado as its 22nd coach. They won four Big 12 North championships and a conference title under his leadership in 2001. He also led them to the nation’s runner-up spot.
