He founded the first UCI-registered Australian Trade Team in 1996, the GIANT-Australian Institute of Sport Cycling Team (GIANT-AIS; later: ZVVZ-GIANT-AIS), as part of the effort to integrate professional riders and competitions in the buildup to the Sydney Olympics 2000.

Heiko Salzwedel, a German cycling coach and team manager, was born in Schmalkalden on April 16, 1957. He was named the national track cycling coach for Denmark in 2005. With a semifinal performance of 3:56.831, the second-fastest time in the world, he moved the Danish team pursuit squad up three places, from 10th at the 2006 World Championships in Bordeaux to Olympic Silver in Beijing.

He relocated back to Europe in 1998, serving for a short time as the German Cycling Federation’s (BDR) Performance Director before transferring to UK Sport’s Lottery-funded “Monitoring & Evaluation” unit in 2000. Salzwedel changed jobs in 2001, taking a position as Performance Manager at British Cycling.
