The Australian born Helen Toner was born in 1992 in Melbourne, Victoria, to lawyers Mark and Emily Toner. Her brothers are Daniel, Guy, Ben, and Timothy. She attended Melbourne Girls Grammar School, where she also  participated in a range of extracurricular activities like debate, chess, and music in addition to her academic success. She also developed an interest in engineering and science, especially biotechnology and chemistry. After high school, Helen studied at the University of Melbourne, where she obtained a Diploma in Languages with a concentration in Mandarin Chinese and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering. Helen joined the worldwide Effective Altruism movement.
