Akermanis moved to Brisbane when he was nine years old. He was born in Mildura, Victoria, to parents John Akermanis, a Canadian, and Shona Carswell, an Australian. When Akermanis moved to Queensland in 1986, he joined the Mayne under-10s squad.

At the age of 13, Akermanis discovered he was not the child of his mother’s former partner, John Akermanis. Career

Akermanis, who played on the flank for the Brisbane Bears, was an important part of the midfield.

In Round 4 of the 1995 season, Akermanis made his AFL debut, collecting 19 disposals and tallying one goal in the Bears’ loss against Carlton. In his first season, he played in 17 games and scored 12 goals.

Akermanis began competing in the Tasmanian State League in 2011 with the Glenorchy Football Club and a few special events at various rural clubs. In the Ovens & Murray Football League, he was appointed captain-coach of the North Albury Football Club in 2013.
