On June 13, 1959, Jim Irsay was born in Lincolnwood, Illinois. Harriet and Robert Irsay are his parents. In addition to being the owner of an American professional football team, his father was a businessman. He owned the Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League from 1972 until his death in 1997. Both his sister Roberta, who perished in a car accident in 1971, and brother Thomas, who was born with a mental illness, passed away in 1999. Jim Irsay completed his high school education at Wilmette, Illinois’ Loyola Academy. Following high school, he studied at Southern Methodist University, where he earned a broadcast media degree in 1982. Jim Irsay played as a walk-on for the football team of SMU Mustangs, but his playing career was cut short due to an ankle injury. He is a Polish and Hungarian-Jewish citizen of the United States.

Professional life and Career

After swapping franchises with Colts owner Carroll Rosenbloom to acquire the Los Angeles Rams, Robert Irsay, Irsay’s father, acquired the Baltimore Colts when Irsay was twelve years old. Following his 1982 SMU graduation, he became a member of the Colts’ professional staff. In 1984, he was appointed vice president and general manager, a month after the Colts moved from Baltimore to Indianapolis. Jim assumed the role of senior executive vice president, general manager, and chief operating officer in April 1996 following his father’s stroke in 1995. Jim and his stepmother fought in court for ownership of the team after his father passed away in 1997, but in the end, Jim—who was then 37—became the youngest owner in NFL history.

From Jim’s takeover in 1995, the Colts had a 258-191-1 regular season record. The 258 wins throughout that time period rank fourth in the NFL, per Pro Football Reference. In addition to 18 postseason trips, two Super Bowls, and Super Bowl XLI, the team has won ten division crowns. Indianapolis won 115 regular-season games between 2000 and 2009, which was the second-most of any NFL team during that time.

Since joining the organization in 1984, Irsay has collaborated with a number of Pro Football Hall of Fame coaches, players, and executives, including Edgar James (2020), Peyton Manning (2021), Marshall Faulk (2011), Tony Dungy (2016), Marvin Harrison (2016), Marshall Faulk (2011), and Eric Dickerson (Pro Football Hall of Fame class of 1999).
