John Morrison Released From WWE Contracts

On November 8, 2021, John Morrison was let go from his WWE contract as part of an eighth round of layoffs brought on by budget reductions owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. In this round of cuts, the WWE contracts of Morrison, Isaiah “Swerve” Scott, Top Dolla, Ashante “Thee” Adonis, Tegan Nox, Drake Maverick, Shane Thorne, and Jaxson Ryker were all terminated. John Morrison began his career with the WWE as a cast member for “Tough Enough III” in 2002, where he ultimately shared the victory with Matt Cappotelli. They then appeared on an episode of “Heat” in January 2004, where they were defeated by Garrison Cade and Mark Jindrak. On the first March 2004 episode of “Raw,” he made his main roster debut as a heel under the ring name “Johnny Blaze.” His name was changed to “Johnny Nitro” three weeks later after being altered to “Johnny Spade” the following week. Nitro broke off his relationship with Melina after Mercury left, and he was then put in a tag team with Kenny Dykstra until the 2007 WWE draft, when Nitro was selected for the ECW brand. On the 19th June edition of “ECW,” Nitro made his brand debut by defeating Nunzio. Morrison and Miz defeated CM Punk and Kofi Kingston to win the World Tag Team Championship at a live event on December 13 after receiving the “Tag Team of the Year” Slammy Award on “Raw” on December 8th. John and R-Truth defeated Cryme Tyme and The Hart Dynasty on the “SmackDown” broadcast from March 5 to earn a match for the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship against ShoMiz (Big Show and The Miz). Hennigan later joined with the new television program Lucha Underground on the El Rey network, where he competed as Johnny Mundo. This was announced in September 2014.
On October 29, 2014, Mundo competed in the main event of the first Lucha Underground broadcast. He defeated Prince Puma and took home $100,000. On January 7, 2015, Mundo took part in a 20-man “Aztec Warfare” battle royal for the Lucha Underground Championship. He was the second wrestler to enter the ring, but Prince Puma, who ultimately won the Championship, eliminated him last. On September 27, Konnan resigned as the group’s head and proclaimed Mundo as an official member of the “rudo” stable, “La Sociedad.” Mundo challenged El Patron Alberto for the AAA Mega Championship on October 4 at Heroes Inmortales IX, but was unsuccessful since he was disqualified. Pentagon agreed to a match at Triplemania XXIV when Mundo challenged the latter to one for the AAA Latin American Belt. On August 28, at the show, Mundo defeated Pentagon to win the championship, making history as the first non-Mexican to do so.
