Following Porter’s declaration, Feinstein said in a statement Tuesday that “everyone is of course free to throw their hat in the ring,” and that she’ll spell out her plans for 2024 “at the proper time.”
Since late December, California has been hit by disastrous floods that has caused thousands of people to abandon their homes and killed at least 14 people. “Right now, I’m focused on making sure California has all the resources it needs to deal with the catastrophic storms that have ravaged the state and killed more than a dozen people,” Feinstein said in a statement.

On Tuesday, Lee and Schiff spokespeople told POLITICO that Porter’s declaration had no effect on their plans to launch their own campaigns. Schiff has previously stated that if Feinstein does not run for re-election, he will consider running, and he has already discussed a future bid with Feinstein, according to a source close to him.
A person close to Schiff also told POLITICO they were “perplexed” by Porter’s choice to declare her candidacy on Tuesday as California faced a relentless succession of storms.
Rep. Ro Khanna
(D-Calif.), another candidate for Feinstein’s seat in 2024, declined to comment on Porter’s statement on Tuesday but told POLITICO that he will make a decision on running “in a few months.”
“I’m simply so focused on the flooding in my area and the storms this week,” Khanna explained. “We just finished an election. I’m not going to make any decisions for a few months.”

Porter, a three-term member of Congress, is well-positioned to run a strong Senate campaign. With $7.7 million on hand as of the end of 2022 and $25 million raised in the previous cycle. And the radical Democrat is a prodigious fundraiser.
Despite Porter’s tremendous fundraising and ability to appeal to swing voters, the contest is expected to be extremely tough — especially given California’s primary system, which might put two Democrats against each other in the general election in 2024.
Porter’s revelation sent shockwaves through California’s campaign landscape. Former Republican Assemblymember Scott Baugh announced his intention to run for the seat in 2024 after unsuccessfully challenging Porter in 2022. The lack of an incumbent may help Republicans flip the contested Orange County seat.
Democratic state Sen. Josh Newman will not compete for Porter’s seat. According to a representative. A representative for Democratic state Sen. Dave Min, who came in second in the 2018 primary to Porter, did not reply to a request for comment.
