He became a member of the “Tartan Gang” and was given the title of “General” after only a brief time in this loyalist gang.

Stone met Tommy Herron, the commander of the Ulster Defense Association, and three of his friends, who were later withdrawn after failing to kill a German Shepherd dog. He was imprisoned for stealing and was sentenced to six months in prison for stealing firearms. He was later imprisoned for stealing a car. Stone abandoned UDA after Herron’s killing and joined Red Hand Commando (RHC), a loyalist faction led by Sammy Cinnamond. Andy Tyrie granted Stone permission to reactivate his membership in UDA in 1984.

After killing Catholic milkman Patrick Brady on November 16, 1984, he committed his first murder. In 1985, he attempted but failed to assassinate Robert McAllister. He murdered Kevin McPolin in November 1985, and he was charged with the murder of Dermont Hackett in 1987.

Stone was convicted of murdering three people during a funeral in Milltown Cemetery in March 1988 and sentenced to 13 years in prison, only to be released under the Good Friday Agreement on July 24, 2000. He was also detained for attempting to attack the House of Commons.
