Childhood and Education
On December 9, 1979, in Lagos, Nigeria, Natasha Akpoti was born into a family consisting of her Ukrainian mother and Nigerian father. Her mother, Ludmila Kravchenk, is a Ukrainian who also was born in Rakitna, near Chernivtsi. Her father, Dr. Jimoh Abdul Akpoti, is from Kogi State’s Obeiba-Ihima. She was raised in Ihima, Okene Local Government, throughout her early years. After her father passed away in 1998, the family was also compelled to relocate. Between 2000 and 2004, she graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Abuja. She was also admitted to the Nigerian bar in 2005 following her graduation from the Nigerian Law School in Abuja. Natasha also began attending the University of Dundee in 2011 and graduated in 2012 with a Master of Laws. She also earned a Master of Business Administration in Oil and Gas Management from the University of Dundee.
Professional life and Career
2007 saw Natasha Akpoti graduate from the Nigerian Law School and begin working as a legal counsel with Brass NLG. In 2015, she also established the Builders Hub Impact Investment Programme, or BHIIP. She gained notoriety on March 1, 2018, when she also presented the National Assembly with an investigative report on dishonest activities at the Ajaokuta steel mill. In spite of numerous attempts to revive it, the steel mill has lain dormant since its original construction. The report she presented exposed also the ongoing fraud and waste of public cash.
The Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, however, rejected the study, and Akpoti also charged with purposeful misrepresentation of the House of Representatives. Additionally, a group of independent steel dealers asserted that Akpoti was also funding a campaign to discredit the government and benefit particular business interests. A High Court in Abuja has ordered Ifeanyi Uba and Williams Orji, the owners of the Authority newspaper, to compensate Natasha Akpoti for the defamatory articles they published against her. The award is also ten million nairas. In 2018, Natasha Akpoti also declared her intention to run on the Social Democratic Party (SDP) ticket for the Nigerian Senate seat representing Kogi Central.
