Beginnings in Life and Family

Peter Alliss was born on the 28th of February in Berlin, Germany, in the year 1931. The English golfer Percy Alliss and his wife, Dorothy Rust Alliss, had two children, and he was their second son. Percy Alexander Alliss, better known by his nickname Alec, was the couple’s oldest son.

When Peter was just one year old, his family relocated back to their home in the United Kingdom. He was educated at a prestigious boarding school in the south of England during his formative years. Because the golfer did not have much interest in his academics, he dropped out of school when he was fourteen years old to seek a career in golf.

Professional Career in Golf

In 1947, when he was only 16 years old, Peter Alliss made the transition from amateur to professional player. Beginning in his life, he worked alongside his father as an assistant in the family business.Alliss had a career in the music industry that spanned over twenty years. During this time period, he competed in and participated in ten World Cups and eight Ryder Cups, winning over twenty tournaments along the way. He also won a half-dozen national championships.

Following his retirement, Alliss began his career as a golf commentator for BBC. His no-nonsense commentary won him supporters as well as detractors. Despite this, the BBC continued to employ him, and over the course of his career at the BBC, he became one of the golf commentators with the longest tenure, earning him the title of “Voice of Golf.”

In addition to providing commentary for the BBC, he did so for a number of other major networks around the world, such as ESPN and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. In addition to that, Alliss was a golf course architect. He is the designer of over 50 different courses, one of which is The Belfry. In addition to that, he was the host of the television show Around with Alliss for seven different series. On the show, he would interview famous people about their passion for golf. Acceptance Speech for Awards, Honors, and the Hall of Fame

In recognition of his many accomplishments and contributions to the sport of golf during his lifetime, Peter Alliss received a number of trophies and honors. In 2002, Bournemouth University presented him with an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters for his contributions to the literary world. The Golf Foundation bestowed upon him the “Spirit of Golf award” earlier this year. He was also going to be honored with the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to the sport of golf. However, he declined the distinction that was bestowed to him.

It would not be inaccurate to state that being inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2012 was one of his greatest accomplishments and most unforgettable awards. Because of both his speech and his actions throughout the event, the attendees will have a very vivid memory of it.

During his remarks at the Hall of Fame induction ceremony, he discussed his previous principal, Mrs. Violet Weymouth. He related the account of how Mrs. Weymouth had confided in his parents that although he possesses a brain, he is unwilling to make use of it, and she is concerned about his future. The golfer completed his narrative by flipping off his previous instructor by giving him the middle finger.

Peter Alliss on Family, Marriage, and Children

Peter Alliss has gone through two different marriages. In 1953, he married Joan McGuinness and they said their vows to each other. The couple’s first child, Gary, was born in 1954, and their second child, Carol, was born in 1960, not long after the wedding.

The first marriage of Alliss unfortunately ended in divorce. The year 1972 marked the year when he officially became married to his second wife, Jackie Grey. They welcomed four children into the world: two daughters named Sarah and Victoria, and two sons named Simon and Henry. Victoria suffered from serious disabilities from birth and passed away when she was 9 years old. Gary is an accomplished golfer who led the Great Britain and Ireland PGA Cup teams in both 2007 and 2009.

The Passing of Peter Alliss

At the age of 89 and in the midst of quiet at his home in Hindhead, Surrey, on December 5, 2020, Peter Alliss passed away quietly. Many people were taken aback by his untimely passing.

Despite the fact that he was admitted to the hospital for a brief stay in September 2020 when he was 89 years old, his general health was excellent. In the year 2020, he continued to provide comments from the comfort of his home.
