Childhood Memories

Ritu Phogat had a well-trained childhood, having learned to wrestle from her father when she was just eight years old. She, like every other child, did not relish waking up at four a.m. every day to practice, but it eventually became a significant part of her routine.

She revealed that Ritu was constantly at odds with her sisters as she grew up. During this time, her father would scold all of her sisters, claiming that it takes two to fight.

Ritu developed a passion for wrestling as she grew older, and she aspired to pursue it professionally. In fact, she only attended school until the ninth grade before dropping out to pursue wrestling full-time.

Early Career of Ritu Phogat

Ritu had her entire emphasis on wrestling after dropping out of school, and she competed in multiple district-level and state-level wrestling events. She had a lot of success in the tournaments all along the road.

Wrestling

Ritu did not begin wrestling as a freestyle wrestler until 2011, when he competed in the 48 kg freestyle category. She debuted in the international arena three years later, in 2014. She was competing in the 2014 FILA Junior World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia, at the time.

Ritu Phogat had won the annual National Wrestling Championships two years in a row by 2016. She won the gold medal in the 48kg division at the 2016 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships in Singapore.

Moving forward, Ritu was the most priced female wrestler at the Pro Wrestling League auction before the year ended. She had a 36 lakh INR deal with the Jaipur Ninjas brand at the time.

Ritu was meant to face Itsuki Hirata in her last match, however Hirata was forced to withdraw due to an injury. As a result, she later battled Jenelyn Olsim.

Ritu eventually won the bout, but it was not without controversy. Ritu appeared to give Olsim an intentional forehead drive during the match in Singapore. It’s a violation of Asian martial arts promotion laws. For those who are unknown, ONE’s global rule set.

The referee, however, omitted to show her the yellow card, for which she was later fined 10% of her fight money.

Olsim would have received a red card and been disqualified from the match if she had been injured or unable to continue after Ritu’s maneuver.

Ritu Phogat later revealed in a post-match interview that she had no knowledge the move was forbidden in that ring.
