Rusev was born in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and now lives in Nashville, Tennessee, United States. Slavka Barnyasheva is his mother’s name, and his father’s name is unknown. He also has a sibling, whose name has yet to be revealed.

  • Moving on to his sporting career, Rusev emigrated from Bulgaria to the United States in the mid-2000s with the goal of becoming a professional wrestler. Then he went to the Knokx Pro Wrestling Academy to train as a wrestler under Gangrel and Rikishi.
  • Later, on November 22nd, 2008, he made his debut in the San Diego, California-based independent promotion New Wave Pro Wrestling, defeating Aerial Star under the ring name Miroslav Makaraov.
  • In 2010, he signed with Vendetta Pro Wrestling (VPW), a Santa Maria, California-based independent promotion, and changed his ring name to Miroslav. Markus Mac was his manager while he wrestled for VPW.

  • In March 2012, he returned to FCW with Nick Rogers as his manager. He shattered his neck in the summer of 2012, crippling his arm for a while. He moved to Thailand to study the martial art Muay Thai while undergoing rehabilitation. WWE relaunched FCW as NXT in August 2012.
  • Following the healing of his neck, he made his NXT television debut on May 30th, 2013, in a battle royal to decide the number one contender for the NXT Championship, which was won by Bo Dallas. On August 21st, he lost his first singles match on NXT to Dolph Ziggler.

  • On May 18th, 2015, following the Payback episode of Raw, He broke his relationship with Lana, who retaliated with a slap. He reverted to being billed from Bulgaria on the May 25th broadcast of Raw, and began carrying the Bulgarian flag to ringside. He tried unsuccessfully to reconcile with Lana later that evening.
  • On the following SmackDown, he returned to the ring, defeating Fandango while wrestling in shoes to avoid further foot injuries. He responded to John Cena’s open challenge for the United States Championship on Raw on July 13th.
  • As part of the Superstar Shake-up in the 2017-18 season, he was relocated to the SmackDown brand. Rusev made his first appearance on WWE television since Fastlane on the April 25th episode of SmackDown Live, coming via satellite, and declaring that he would not make his debut on SmackDown unless he was handed a WWE Championship bout at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view on June 18th.

  • On the December 25th episode of SmackDown Live, after failing to win the United States Championship from Shinsuke Nakamura at Crown Jewel, he ultimately won the title for the third time in his career.
  • On the Royal Rumble pre-show on January 27th, 2019, he lost the title to Nakamura again. He attacked R-Truth, who had just defeated Nakamura for the United States Championship, two days later on SmackDown Live, and pressured him into defending his newly-won title against him, but Truth held his belt.
  • Following intervention from Lana and Liv Morgan on the January 13th, 2020 episode of Raw, Lashley defeated him in a singles match; following the match, a mixed tag team bout between him and Morgan and Lana and Lashley was set. In the January 20th episode of Raw, Lana and Lashley defeated his and Morgan’s mixed tag team.
  • As a result of budget cuts resulting from the 2019-20 coronavirus epidemic, he was dismissed from his WWE contract on April 15th, 2020.
