“I never anticipate films to succeed or find an audience, and when they do, it astounds me,” Farrell remarked in his acceptance speech. The pleasant performer took care to acknowledge his director, Martin McDonagh, with whom he initially collaborated on the 2008 film In Bruges. “I owe you so much…you changed the course of my life in ways for which I will begrudgingly grateful for the rest of my days,” he said.
The actor plays Pádraic Silleabháin in Banshees, an Irish guy whose idyllic life is upended when his long-time best friend stops speaking to him. “He inhabits a purity that I’ve never—and I’m fine with never—but I’ve never accessed it to the same degree or as regularly as he does,” Farrell recently said of his Banshees character to Vanity Fair.
Fellow candidates were Babylon’s Diego Calva, Glass Onion’s Daniel Craig, White Noise’s Adam Driver, and The Menu’s Ralph Fiennes, but Farrell had been in the lead for much of the season due to the critical praise for his role in Banshees.
