Oscars Best Actor predictions: Who will nab that wide-open 5th slot?

Best Actor Award 2022 | Who will Win the Best Actor Awards 2022?

Four of the five potential Best Actor nominees for the Oscars, according to our survey, are Brendan Fraser (The Whale), Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), Austin Butler (Elvis), and Bill Nighy (Living). One post remains vacant, and its filler is currently unknown. For the most recent Best Actor graph, scroll down.

Currently, all 24 of our experts agree that Fraser and Farrell are the two leading candidates. Nearly all of them (22 out of 24) are also placing bets on Butler. And a sizable 19 out of 24 predicted that Nighy would be nominated. However, there is a sharp decline after that as Experts are split between several competitors.

Tom Cruise | Oscars Best Actor

(“Top Gun: Maverick“) is currently the most likely candidate to occupy that fifth position, according to 11 Experts. Despite having three prior Oscar nominations, he hasn’t been selected in well than 20 years. He did, however, make the Critics Choice Awards roster, despite being passed over by the Golden Globes (which is not surprising given that he returned his Globes in protest of the troubled awards organization). An acting nomination for an action blockbuster is uncommon, though.

Hugh Jackman (“The Son“) is predicted by eight experts to come in second. On paper, he seemed like a good candidate for a nomination and even a win because his movie is Florian Zeller’s sequel to “The Father,” which just two years ago won Anthony Hopkins the Best Actor Oscar. Additionally, Jackman’s performance earned him a Golden Globe nomination. However, the film’s mixed reviews might harm his chances.

If enough Oscar voters see two critically regarded up-and-comers, they might receive their first nominations.

Paul Mescal (“Aftersun“) appeared at Critics Choice and is predicted by three Experts, but Jeremy Pope (“The Inspection“) was nominated by the Golden Globes and supported by four Experts. But the list doesn’t stop there. At least one Expert is on the side of Christian Bale (“Amsterdam“), Diego Calva (“Babylon“), Gabriel LaBelle (“The Fabelmans“), and Adam Sandler (“Hustle”).
